Pat Hines, a master quilter, is a descendant of Mr. Christmas Hemmings. Mr. Hemmings, a former slave, purchased 650 acres in Live Oak, Florida, in 1885. His family has preserved much of that land through generations and Mr. Hemmings is recognized as the first African American Century Pioneer Family Farm owner in the state.
Hines wrote Christmas in the South to share her many-times-great-grandfather's story, including why quilts made by enslaved people are so important to them. Hines has mastered the art of quilt-making and is an expert at food canning. She often shares her expertise in both when she talks with groups and schools.
